Not only does bingo have an uncanny ability to be able to re-create itself, this game is apparently recession proof. Perhaps this is due to the fact that during the great depression in the US, Edwin Lowe, managed to make a fortune out of the game after he discovered it at a country fair. Perhaps its resilience lies in the adaptability and popularity of the game. But the proof of the pudding is with the auditors and the well respected accounting house PWC (Price Waterhouse Coopers), has officially stated that BINGO is going to prove to be one of the "most resilient of all UK gaming sectors".
However the authoritative PWC does not see the same thing happening for the casino industry, apparently bingo is on safe ground. According to PWC casinos are "staring down the barrel of a gun", but bingo has been given a new injection of life, with the high court ruling which state that Rank (Mecca Bingo) was entitles to VAT refunds in excess of £62 million.
The report released by PWC also stated that bingo as opposed to other casino activities is potentially less exposed to the present economic downturn, because bingo is the least cyclical type of gaming enjoyed by UK flutterers. People in the UK have always regarded bingo as entertainment rather than gambling. When a recession is imminent or happening, the first thing you do is look at your budget. If you are sensible you take away the gambling budget and shave off your entertainment budget, but don't do away with it entirely. In as much as playing bingo is considered to be entertainment and not gambling, it won't suffer as much.
Playing bingo is in the most part inexpensive and allows the player to relax and have fun, with the possibility of winning a prize. Online bingo is cheaper to play, not having to deal with the same overheads as the land-based industry, and therefore is even less exposed than bricks and mortar bingo clubs. In actual fact online bingo may even benefit from the recession due to the resilience of their target market.
